SharePoint The data source control failed to execute the insert command

Recently I had migrated my list and its contents using ShareGate from Prod site to Dev site. There were some warnings and errors, but I chose to ignore them thinking that there may be related to users not being found on the dev environment. Creating a new item in that list gave the following error.

The data source control failed to execute the insert command. f8722a9d-2ff6-0080-1d51-17e445d41d9e

The list contained 2 lookup columns, one of them was a self-lookup. If I had paid attention to the error report, I would have spotted this error:
"The lookup column cannot be copied because the list '' is not in a parent site or in the same site as the column.".
This was because the lookup column could not be created, as the list was not there. I created the lookup column and the new item creation worked as expected.

First look for any missing columns in the list if this error occurs, before looking for other solutions.

SharePoint 2010 - The file is currently checked out or locked for editing by another user

Today I faced an issue with the deletion of a folder in a SharePoint 2010 document library. The folder was empty (viewed with admin account too), but could not be deleted.

Clicking the delete button resulted in the popup stating:
"The file is currently checked out or locked for editing by another user."

Tried deleting via all possible means (Explorer mode, Datasheet Mode, Power Shell), but with the same result.
Some blogs suggested deleting using SharePoint Designer 2010, but could not find a way to do so using SPD. Would be grateful if someone pointed out a link where it is explained how to view list/doc lib items using SPD and working upon them.

While researching the issue I browsed to:
"Document library settings --> Manage files which have no checked in version"

On the resulting page I found there was a file under the problematic folder and this file was checked out to a user. Look for the folder name under the Location column.

Took ownership of the document and published a major version, after which I was able to delete the folder :)

List does not exist. The page you selected contains a list that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user.

Recently I faced an issue after migrating a SharePoint 2007 Portal from one farm to another, using stsadm export/import method. On some pages there were Content Query web parts fetching data from certain lists. After import they stopped displaying data and the message on the CQWP was:

"This query has returned no items. To configure the query for this web part, open the tool pane"

Clicking on the "open the tool pane" link or editing this web part caused the page to refresh with the message:

"List does not exist. The page you selected contains a list that does not exist.  It may have been deleted by another user."

In the source portal when CQWP was configured, it put the GUID of the list and the selected columns. During importing of the content on the destination farm, all the lists & columns were created with new GUIDs, thus the CQWP could not find the source list and thus gave error during edit.

To get around the error I exported the web part and opened it in notepad.
There was an entry:
<property name="ListGuid" type="string">280569DE-6723-4840-BF61-75F02E4226DC</property>

Deleted this line, as there is another line which specifies the List name:
<property name="ListName" type="string">LIST NAME</property>

Look for the GUIDs in the webpart and replace them with the Column names.
E.g. I had applied filter in the webpart on the column "ProductTypeKey".
The resulting entry in the webpart was:
<property name="FilterField1" type="string">GUID</property>
After editing the entry was:
<property name="FilterField1" type="string">ProductTypeKey</property>
Look for similar entries and replace the GUIDs with the Column names.

The same situation can occur with the DataView Web Parts also and the solution is:
1) Export the web part
2) Edit it in notepad
3) Replace the list GUID (after ListID) with the name of the list
4) Replace all occurances of "ListID" with "ListName"

SmartPart - unable to load ~\/UserControls\CustomControl.aspx in SharePoint. Could not load CustomControl.ascx

We had an issue with one of the custom controls hosted by the SmartPart (with AJAX).

The issue was:
  • A custom control was deployed to the "UserControls" folder under the portal's virtual directory.
  • Then a page was created and "SmartPart with AJAX" added to it.
  • In the SmaprtPart's properties section, under "User control to display:" drop-down it displayed "Could not load CustomControl.ascx".
  • I still selected the custom control from the drop-down and clicked on OK.
  • The control was added, but there was an error message
    Error: unable to load ~\/UserControls\CustomControl.ascx
    Details: c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\portal80\UserControls\CustomControl.ascx(6):
error CS0023: Operator '--' cannot be applied to operand of type 'void'.
The cause of this error was the server-side comments section in the .ascx file:
<%--
            // !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
//This control is not used in other environments.
-- %>

As soon as this section was removed from the .ascx file, both the errors disappeared. The control appeared without errors in the drop-down and rendered fine on the page.

FatalError: The version of the package 12.0.10.0 is different from the current version this program supports, 14.0.0.0.

Recently I was performing a test migration of a site from MOSS to SharePoint 2010, using the stsadm export & import options.
The site contents were with all the versions & no file compression:
stsadm -o export -url "" -filename "" -versions 4 -nofilecompression

Then the site was imported into a blank SharePoint 2010 site:
stsadm -o import -url "" -filename "" -nofilecompression

The import process failed with following error:
FatalError: The version of the package 12.0.10.0 is different from the current version this program supports, 14.0.0.0.
Debug:    at Microsoft.SharePoint.Deployment.SPDeploymentSchemaVersion.Validate(SPSite site)
   at Microsoft.SharePoint.Deployment.SPImport.Run()
Progress: Import did not complete.

The culprit is the line:
<SchemaVersion Version="12.0.10.0" Build="12.0.0.6514" DatabaseVersion="476278" SiteVersion="0" />
in SystemData.xml.

Replace Version="12.0.0.0" with Version="14.0.0.0"
and Build="12.0.0.6514" with Version="14.0.4762.1000".

Here the build number "12.0.0.6514" is the MOSS version of the servere where the backup was performed and "14.0.4762.1000" is the build number of the SharePoint 2010 server where the import is being performed. Check the versions on both the export & import servers and replace the above values with the ones on your servers.

I edited the SystemData.xml file and ran the stsadm import process after that and it completed smoothly. There were a few errors and warnings, however, but those did not abort the process. If there is another critical error resulting in the import operation being aborted, look at the import.log file (in th folder where the site contents are being imported from) and there will be afair indication of what went wrong. This is the reason I export contents with the nofilecompression option, as it gives me the ability to have a look at the contents and find/rectify the cause of the errors.

SharePoint Versions after installing Updates/Patches

How to find the level of SharePoint running on your servers after installing Updates/Patches

One can find out the version of WSS 3/MOSS by going to the “Site Settings” of either the Central Admin or any WSS/MOSS site. There, above the action links, you can find the version. Alternatively open IIS Manager and look under “HTTP headers” in the properties of any MOSS web site.
Following is the table listing version changes to MOSS 2007 and/or WSS 3.0, after updates/patches are applied. I do not have any information on the patches before SP1.

To confirm that a particular service pack is install on SharePoint Server you must either check the version numbers of specific dlls as specified in the related Microsoft Knowledge Based article or select the Show Updates check box in Add and Remove Programs.
To find out the SharePoint version by querying the SharePoint database, refer to David Hunter’s blog: http://www.davehunter.co.uk/Blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=77.
